- Organic Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

Feeling anxious? Having a bad day?

Then a cup of Organic Lemon Balm Tea will soon put the spring back in your step.

Research suggests the rosmarinic acid in lemon balm increases the availability of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a type of neurotransmitter in the brain. Low levels of GABA in the brain are believed to be associated with anxiety. High levels have a positive effect on mood.

The volatile oils in lemon balm tea - citral, citronellal, citronellol, and geraniol - are the source of the pleasant aroma of lemon balm and also of its many healing qualities. These bio-chemicals assist in calming muscular tension and heightened senses that are commonly experienced by people suffering from anxiety.

The calming properties have the further effect of relieving insomnia, heart palpitations, and tension headaches that stress and anxiety are often responsible for creating.

Finally, lemon balm is so effective at relaxing our bodies that it has been shown to calm children with ADHD. It doesn’t contain any caffeine, so it is safe for children to drink and much healthier than a lot of other things available to them.

DIRECTIONS.

You can easily drink 3 or 4 cups of lemon balm tea in a day. However, this herbal tea should only be drunk for short periods. Most guides recommend drinking the tea for three weeks and then taking a break for a week.

IS LEMON BALM TEA SAFE TO DRINK EVERY DAY?

You can easily drink 3 or 4 cups of lemon balm tea in a day. However, this herbal tea should only be drunk for short periods. Most guides recommend drinking the tea for three weeks and then taking a break for a week.

It should definitely not be drunk for longer than 4 weeks without a break.

Side effects of drinking too much of this tea include stomach pain, vomiting, increased body temperature, headaches and dizziness.

Small amounts are deemed acceptable for pregnant women and children.

People on anti-thyroid and sedative drugs should consult a doctor before drinking this tea.

WHAT IS IN LEMON BALM TEA THAT MAKES IT SO EFFECTIVE?

First, it is full of essential oils (citral / lemonol, citronellol, caryophyllene, linalool, citronellal) and antioxidants.

It contains minerals such as: zinc, iron, magnesium and calcium; and vitamins such as: vitamin A, vitamin c, thiamine, riboflavins.

It contains no caffeine or cholesterol.

IS LEMON BALM THE SAME THING AS LEMONGRASS?

No. They are completely different plants from different parts of the world.

Lemon balm is a plant related to mint and comes from Europe and the Middle East. It has a slight minty taste.

Lemongrass is, as the name suggests, a member of the grass family and comes from south-east Asia. It has a very lemony flavour.

      CAN MY CHILDREN DRINK IT?

Yes, it is safe for children to drink.

It can also be drunk hot or cold, so the whole family can enjoy a refreshing, tasty herbal tea in winter or on a hot summer’s day.
