WHERE DOES LIQUORICE COME FROM? Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a flowering plant from the bean family that grows to approximately 1.5 m tall. Liquorice tea comes from the dried root of the plant, while the confectionary is made with juice from the root. The plant itself is native to Eurasia – southern Europe and western Asia, and the tea was known to be drunk by Egyptian pharaohs. |
WHAT IS LIQUORICE TEA GOOD FOR? Liquorice contains chemicals which not only settle upset stomachs and other digestive issues, but which are powerful enough to kill the bacteria that cause stomach ulcers. The root from which the tea is made contains other specialised chemicals that mimic the effects of oestrogen in the body. What this means is you can enjoy a delicious cup of liquorice tea while topping up diminishing supplies of oestrogen. The result is milder menopause symptoms and a more comfortable life. However, it can also ease upper respiratory problems, help prevent tooth cavities, and is also said to have powerful anti-cancer properties. |
WHY IS IT CALLED LIQUORICE? “Liquorice” is the British / Australian spelling, while “licorice” is the US, and occasional Canadian, spelling. But no matter how you spell it, the name originated from a Greek word meaning “sweet root”. In fact, the roots of Spanish liquorice are so sweet, you can suck on them with any processing necessary. |
HOW MUCH LIQUORICE TEA IS SAFE TO DRINK? It’s actually possible to have too much liquorice. It can cause high blood pressure and hypokalaemia, a condition which can lead to more serious cardiac arrhythmias and myopathy. It is therefore recommended you drink no more than a cup a day. |
DOES LIQUORICE REALLY HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT? Yes, and there are studies to prove it. Researchers found in a 2006 study that people who ingested liquorice oil were more likely to maintain body weight as well as reduce both cholesterol and amounts of body fat.
